Today’s post wraps up our 3rd Family Book Club. I’m taking a brief break and plan to come back with a new book selection in the spring. I have some ideas for how to tweak/ improve on the Family Book Club and I would love to get your input. If you have been reading along and would be interested in giving me a little feedback please email me at amomwithalessonplan@gmail.com. Thanks and happy reading!

Family Book Club - week 5

Reading Goal

This week read chapters 17-20.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Discussion Questions & Activities

On page 146 of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Classic Starts version, you will find more discussion questions. (That’s one of the things I love about the Classic Starts series).

Chapter 17 – Activity & Discussion Questions

  • Create a polar small world or sensory tub. Add a submarine or encourage your kids to create one. What other objects could you add from the chapter so the kids can act out the story of Captain Nemo finding this land? Here are some great examples of Arctic sensory tubs. (Fake Snow Sensory Bin, Antarctic Bath Play, Pretend Play with Ice)
  • What would it be like to be the first person ever to step on a piece of land? Why did Mr. Aronnax think Captain Nemo deserved to be the first person to take that step?

Chapter 19 – Discussion Question

  • The people aboard the Nautilus must show great courage when faced with this terrifying situation. Can you think of a time when you needed to have courage? How did it feel when you were in the moment? How did it feel after?

Chapter 20 – Discussion Question

  • Why do you think Captain Nemo wants to keep the men aboard even though they want to leave?
  • Even though Mr. Aronnax had found so much to be excited about on the Nautilus, he reached a point when he no longer wanted to be there. Think of your most perfect place. What would be there? Who would be there. Now imagine that was all you had: those were the only toys you ever played with, the only people you ever saw, the only type of food you ate. Do you think you would ever grow tired of being there? Help each other think of things you would miss if gave up everything else to enjoy only your few favorite things.

What did you think of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
